With the Freeze deadline approaching --March 16--, owners keep themselves quite busy these days, trying to reshape for the best their eight-man lists. So far, several important names changed jerseys for next season. The most notable trades involved the Mikes, fresh new Champions, who went out on the market determined to acquire a couple of the best pitchers in the league. This would have been a virtually impossible task for anyone, but not for the powerful Mikes, who were able to get Kevin Appier from the Candies for Brad Radke and Bernie Williams, and Andy Pettitte from the Burberries for Wilson Alvarez and Jimmy Key (in the same trade, the Mikes got Rafael Palmeiro for Bobby Higginson). Other noteworthy trades involved the Candies (Roberto Alomar came from the Burberries for Palmeiro, traded to the Mikes later in the same night), the Bucks, who got Tim Salmon, Chad Ogea and Tom Gordon from the Flowers for Chuck Knoblauch, the Burberries (they sent Robin Ventura to the Topos for Paul O'Neill and Bob Tewksbury) and the Flowes, who gave up a handful of players (Will Clark, Tim Salmon, Tom Gordon, Mike Jacson, Scott Kamieniecki, Rick Krivda) to get Chuck Knoblauch and Ideki Irabu (back from the Bidons). Also, the Sniffers traded Dwight Gooden and Fernando Tatis to the Christians for Russ Davis. No trades for the Brokers, the Pachos and the Fatties.
This time of the year, as usual, is also dedicated to reshaping the league's rules , an ongoing process as this league, who choosed not to adopt any pre-formatted fantasy game but to play its own instead, is only in its fifth year of existence. This time, the owners came up with a real revolutionary device, which will alter the freezing format from the 1999 season on. As of today, each team is allowed to protect a predetermined number of players (usually nine, but eight this year) for the following season, regardless of their value. From the 1999 draft, we will give each player a salary value, based on his stats of the last three years, and will deal with a salary cap regardless of the number of players frozen.

Mikes latest Championship Team
The two statistic gauges that will help determine a player's value will be OPS (which represents the On Base Percentage plus the Slugging Percentage) and At Bats or Innings Pitched. Among the last three years, more weight will be given to the latest. It was general feeling that this new rule will implement the chances of the weaker teams, without giving any substantial damage to the stronger ones. We'll add more news later on this subject, when the definitive rules will be approved. You can see all the statistics of the 1997 DiamondMind Baseball Championship; they are provided, as usual, by courtesy of the Flowers Home Page.
