Central Pride: Pachos win

The opinion is unanimous: the 2000 draft was the best ever. Surrounded by an atmosphere curiously resembling the famous movie 12 Angry Men (but with nobody playing Henry Fonda…), the owners needed just two and a half evenings to complete their 45-man rosters.

Everybody had a drafting plan, wrong calls and dead time were drastically reduced from the past, and in the end, everybody has reasons to be happy with their choices and to worry about their rivals.

For instance, the Topos' plan was evident: get Carl Everett at any cost. Unfortunately, the same plan was in the Sniffers' mind, and the result was the highest price ever paid for a hitter: Lit. 37,000. Greg Vaughn, acquired by the Pachos for Lit. 29,000, came second, and Tony Batista (Christians, Lit. 25,000) was third. The costliest pitcher was Tim Hudson (Faccos, 35,100), followed by Kent Bottenfield (Flowers) and Darren Oliver (Mikes), both at 25,100. The overall record still belongs to Pedro Martinez, whose coming to the AL cost Lit. 44,500 to the 1998 Sniffers.

The two newcomers (Fatties and Faccos), both on their second run in the League, were evidently more prepared than the previous owners (Bidons and Rabbits), and there is a general sense that this will be a memorable trading season. The first trade was completed just minutes after the end of the draft, indeed, as the Burberries traded Brady Anderson to the Faccos for Butch Huskey before the first pizza was delivered at Tomi (the new official eating-out resort of the League). Also noteworthy, this was the first draft out of the Argodome, as the owners gathered at the Fortitudo Baseball Clubhouse, in the beautiful baseball complex that will host the Seattle Mariners (real baseball, no fantasy!) European tryouts starting this year (for more on this, check the Fortitudo Baseball Homepage).

See the complete list of the players drafted.

All the stats will soon appear, as soon as the season develops (weekly updates at least!). More comments on each team can be found in the Teams page.

Other pages for our friends online:

·        A complete list of the keepers for each team (see also the reference page on the same matter).

·        A complete list of the players drafted by team (a reference page is available on this matter as well).

·        An updated team by team analysis in our usual Teams page, a fan favorite; it displays a roster analysis with the projected lineups for each team.

·        The latest edition of this year's statistical recap for each and every player involved in our game. This page is updated weekly throughout the season, and is the best reference tool to evaluate the current strengths and weaknesses of each team.

You can see all the statistics of the 1999 DiamondMind Baseball Championship; they are provided, as usual, by courtesy of the Flowers Home Page.

Check the League's Coming Events . Stay in touch!

For a complete recap of all the year's trades, see the Trades List Page.
